Helpful Tips for Transitioning to a Gluten-Free Diet

Anyone diagnosed with celiac’s disease (coeliac), wheat allergy or dermatitis herpetiformis should follow a gluten-free lifestyle.  Avoiding foods with gluten is a tough challenge.  Some helpful tips for transitioning to a gluten-free diet include:

  1. Carry a list of gluten foods to avoid with you when you are away from home.
  2. Read labels and product packaging, as many drinks and snacks contain gluten.  It may not be clear which food products contain gluten, but you can look for certain gluten keywords to help you.
  3. Find a healthy list of substitutes for gluten foods; you can still eat cake and pasta with gluten-free substitutes!
  4. If you have the resources, schedule an appointment with a nutritionist to talk about diet changes.
